COLLIER'S THEORY:
Collier believes that teacher's need to integrate bilingual student's first language into their learning. Students will learn much more effectively if they are comfortable in a setting where their "at home" and "at school" languages can be connected. She states that every community should determine their own education and language ideologies to better their student's learning capabilities.
COLLIER SAYS:
Collier is a strong advocate of the fact that "One must teach in two languages, affirm the cultural values of both home and school...(and)be a creative and flexible teacher". In doing so, all students, especially ones who are ESL/ELL will feel accepted and will be more apt to understand what is being taught in the classroom. Collier's piece goes hand in hand with Rodriguez, who speaks about "public vs. private identities" in society. Collier is an advocate for making your public and private identity into one; as both a prominent speaker of two languages; especially in the classroom.
