I was working with a ESL student on formulating questions based upon a story they read. It was a book called "May Day" about a group of people who worked to save others during tragedies. This concept was extremely difficult for the student to understand. So, when she started to try and create her question, I used words she knew in Spanish to help her understand what the English words we were using. Collier believes a student's first language should be used in the classroom to help student's learn another language. The student was able to correctly create a question of her own and integrate her two languages as one.
